Winter is a great time in Animal Crossing New Horizons. In December in the Northern Hemisphere, or June for Southern Hemisphere players, your island and trees will be coated in a glittering, white snow, and there are plenty of new things to do around your island.

At the start of the winter season in Animal Crossing New Horizons, Isabelle will go around and decorate some of the cedar trees planted on your island with baubles and lights. She doesn’t do a very good job of it though, by her own admission, so there’s a chance of finding some colorful decorations lying around on the ground, or even coaxing them to fall yourself (Just don’t tell Isabelle).

You may be lucky enough to find a few ornaments lying around every day as they’ve fallen out of the trees themselves. However, you can get even more of them by giving them a little, ahem, encouragement.

As we already know, shaking trees can reveal all sorts of items, from special decorations, to branches and even money (where are those in real life?). Seasonal trees will also drop seasonal items, such as acorns, pine cones and, in winter, ornaments. In order to get more ornaments in Animal Crossing, all you need to do is shake them out of the decorated cedar trees. Note that not all cedar trees are decorated, though, and those that aren’t won’t drop baubles.

There are a few other things to note before you go off shaking, though. Firstly, make sure there are no other items blocking the ground. There’s only a certain area in which items will fall, and if there’s no space, then nothing will drop. It’s also worth noting that items will drop to the left if you are standing on the right, and vice versa.

Secondly, you can keep shaking! You can shake a tree up to 30 times while there’s still a chance of dropping an item. After that, though, you’re just wasting your time. Although something won’t drop every time, don’t give up if nothing falls the first time, or even after the first branch or bauble.

What are ornaments used for in Animal Crossing

Once you have them, ornaments can be used any time of year in certain holiday-themed DIY projects which you can obtain from beached message bottles, floating gifts and islanders throughout the winter season.
